Bus passengers in the Wirral are about to find that a renumbering exercise is rarely only about numbers. From Sunday 25th October 2026 the borough joins the Liverpool City Region’s publicly controlled network, and the changes range from a simple new route number to entirely new links. Merseytravel’s published route table, read alongside the announcements that support it, shows what is actually different and what stays put.

Franchising Reaches the Wirral

Bus franchising is being introduced in stages across the Liverpool City Region, which means the Combined Authority rather than private operators sets the routes, fares and timetables. The Wirral makes the switch on 25th October 2026, with Knowsley, Liverpool and Sefton due in summer 2027 and the whole region expected to be in public control by the end of 2027. Merseytravel stresses that the transition is gradual, so many familiar services and stops remain in place.

Go-Ahead was selected to run the franchised network based in the borough. The Wirral route table names Go North West as the operator of most franchised routes, which fits with that award.

A New Numbering Scheme

Every Wirral route in the new network starts with the digit 4, and Merseytravel gives the old 17 becoming the 417 as its example. The point is to remove duplicate numbers across the region, which makes more sense once Knowsley, Liverpool and Sefton join in. Most of the changes of this kind are straightforward renumbering with the route left alone.

The Moreton circulars move from 1, 1A, 1B and 1C to 401, 402, 403 and 404, and all four run every 60 minutes throughout the day, in the evening and on Sundays. Services 16, 16A and 17 become 416, 416A and 417, while 38, 38A and 38B move to 438, 438A and 438B. Services 41 and 42 become 441 and 442, and the Heswall-area routes 73, 174, 175 and 181 take the numbers 473, 474, 475 and 481. Further west, 80 and 82 become 480 and 482, while 91 becomes 491. Route 129 between Liscard and Frankby Cemetery is now 429, still with a single return journey on Sundays and bank holidays. Route 1 and X1 between Chester and Liverpool keep their numbers.

Revised and Curtailed Routes

Some routes change shape as well as number. The Liscard and Wallasey circulars, previously 106 and 107, become 405 and 406, with a simpler route that serves Victoria Parade and no longer calls at Mount Road. Each now runs every 60 minutes rather than every 90. Mount Road is picked up instead by alternate journeys on route 414A, and the 414 and 414A are rerouted via St Cath’s Hospital and Prenton on their way between Birkenhead, Upton and New Brighton.

The biggest change is to route 407, which is cut back from West Kirby and Cook Street. It now operates only between Town Meadow and the Whitechapel and Sir Thomas Street area of Liverpool city centre, with a journey every 20 minutes on weekday and Saturday daytimes and hourly on Sundays and in the evening. Additional short Sunday journeys run between Liverpool and Birkenhead. Passengers who previously rode to West Kirby can use routes 438, 483 and 484 for the Moreton to West Kirby section, and Merseyrail provides the link to Liverpool.

Between Birkenhead, Upton and Seacombe, route 413 picks up evening and Sunday journeys, although it does not serve Town Meadow. That allows route 423 to be withdrawn, with the Town Meadow area covered by routes 407, 413 and 417 instead. Elsewhere, routes 471 and 472 between Heswall and Liverpool city centre no longer run to Cook Street at off-peak times but gain extra Sunday morning journeys, and route 491 between Birkenhead and the Holmlands Estate moves from every 65 minutes to every 60, adds a morning journey and avoids Prenton Hall Road and Holm Lane.

Three new services stand out. Route 408 loops between Liscard and Seacombe with an hourly service on weekday and Saturday daytimes. Routes 483 and 484 form an orbital loop from Arrowe Park Hospital via Greasby, West Kirby, Hoylake, Meols, Moreton and Upton and back, with an hourly service during the day, in the evening and on Sundays. Route 453 links Thingwall Corner with Clatterbridge and Wirral Grammar Schools, with an hourly service through the day and variations at school times, and a Birkenhead News report describes it as joining Irby and Heswall to Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.

Frequency improvements add to this. Route 480, the West Kirby to Newton circular, improves from every two hours to hourly, and route 482 does the same while being extended from Calday to Heswall via Thurstaston. Together with route 22, which continues unchanged between Chester and West Kirby under permit, that gives two buses an hour between West Kirby and Heswall. Evening and Sunday journeys are also introduced on route 417, and routes 492 and 495 between Birkenhead, Beechwood and Noctorum now run every 60 minutes instead of every 120 at those times.

Routes That Stay as They Are

Many routes carry on unchanged. These include routes 409, 410 and 411 around Wallasey, Birkenhead and New Brighton, as well as route 418 between Birkenhead, Arrowe Park and New Ferry. The Liverpool links on routes 432, 433, 437, 464 and 487 keep their current form. The late-night N1 between Allerton and Birkenhead continues, running on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings only.

On the Moreton to Broughton corridor, route 811 keeps its number but changes at the edges, as morning journeys skip 12 Quays Ferry Terminal and afternoon journeys only run as far as Woodside. A few small services disappear. Route 81 between West Kirby and Arrowe Park is withdrawn in favour of routes 483 and 484, while the Birkenhead circulars 216 and 217 give way to extra journeys on routes 418 and 491.

Planning a Wirral Bus Journey From 25th October 2026

The route table from Merseytravel was correct at 14th October 2026 and warns that all services may be subject to minor timetable changes, so it pays to check the latest Wirral timetables before travelling. School services are a good example of why, as Merseytravel says there will be no changes to them until 3rd January 2027 or 1st September 2027. The route table says route 653 continues until July 2027, but the timetables list the school journeys as route 453S and carry no route 653, so anyone planning a school journey should look up route 453S in the timetables.
